Colombo Port City Development Project

Four 121 Ton Transformer
Transportation & Installation

Advantis Projects transported and installed four 121 Ton transformers at the Colombo Port City Development Project Substation

Advantis Projects provided a comprehensive end-to-end solution for the inland transportation and installation of four (4) 120MVA transformers and accessories.

Each transformer weighing 120 Tons, required the use of a combination of special pullers and heavy duty hydraulic modular 16 axle multiaxle trailer for the transportation from the East Container Terminal to the electrical substation within the Colombo Port City.

On conclusion of the transportation, each transformer was lifted-off the trailer and rotated to align with the plinth by the use of two (2) heavy lift cranes – 160 Ton and 250 Ton. After rotating the transformer, the cranes offloaded the transformers into special skidding systems to slide the transformers to the final resting point, after which a synchronised jacking system comprising of four (4) 100 Ton jacks were used to lower the transformer onto the foundation resting plate.

The Advantis Projects engineers, planners, operations teams met with multiple stockholders, which include CHEC Port City Colombo, China Harbour Engineering Company, Atkins (British multinational engineering, design, planning, architectural design, project management and consulting services company), CCCC Fourth Harbor Engineering Co, Tellhow International Engineering & Contracting Co., Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and Board of Investments (BOI), to develop the roadway for transportation, develop the site for heavy lifting equipment operation, and to plan the overall execution of the mammoth scale project. The project was successfully concluded within budget, ahead of schedule, and with zero incidents.
